Previous Seasons
The 2010 Atlanta Falcons are focused on fixing a defense that ranked near the bottom in a number of categories to include Pass defense (28th). Enter free agent CB Dunta Robinson, who signed a six-year $57.5 million contract. The team then used its first round draft selection (19th overall) on LB Sean Weatherspoon. The team resigned free agents WR Brian Finneran, CB Brian Williams, LS Joe Zelenka and CB Brent Grimes.
Other draft selections were DT Corey Peters (83rd overall), OT Mike Johnson (98th overall), C Joe Hawley (117th overall), CB Dominique Franks (135th overall), WR Kerry Meier (165th overall) and S Shann Schillinger (171st overall)
After running off an 11-5 record in 2008 under Mike Brown in his inaugural season, the Falcons turned in another strong showing in 2009 with a 9-7 record but failed to make the playoffs. The team’s defense was a focal point throughout the entire season as they finished ranked 28th against the pass. The team finished 2nd in the NFC South and failed to qualify for the playoffs.
After finishing 4-12 in 2007, the Atlanta Falcons cleaned house. They hired a new Head Coach in 2008; Mike Smith, and ended up with the number one pick in the 2008 draft which they used on Boston College QB Matt Ryan. They then traded up with the Washington Redskins to select USC tackle Sam Baker.
Talk about drama coming into the season, with Michael Vick indicted in animal cruelty charges – the first player to be suspended from the NFL. They have a new coach trying to pull it together, and small offensive linemen. On top of that, they’ve had to deal with injuries and confusion on the field – and no depth whatsoever. What makes things worse is a fickle fan base that jumped ship even before the Vick drama. Jerious Norwood may be the only redeeming quality for the Dirty Dirty. They still need to sort out their QB situation – because they have an OL that doesn’t quite suck with Todd McClure and Kynan Forney. The ticket buyers that haven’t jumped ship can definitely expect ATL to fix its structural damage, and quick.
In the off-season the Falcons made some pretty big moves that were all pretty much under the radar. They picked up one of the most underappreciated linebackers in the league Edgerton Hartwell. Hartwell had been with the Baltimore Ravens since he broke into the league and was Ray Lewis’ backup until they moved into the 3/4 scheme. He got his chance to get on the field and was an absolute beast. It will be interesting to see what kind of impact Hartwell will bring to the Falcons when he isn’t living in anyone else’s shadow. The Falcons also picked up linebacker Ike Reese who is another linebacker that plays with a very prominent mean streak. Reports from camp have been that the defense is playing at an intensity level that the franchise has never seen before large in part to these two guys in the middle.
The team also brought in some help for their special teams. It wasn’t a secret to anyone that the Falcons kicking game was sub-par last year and head coach Jim Mora Jr. is a firm believer in having strong special teams play. He believes that if the team can win the field position battle then they will win the game. The Falcons went out and got kicker Todd Peterson and punter Toby Gowin to help out their kicking game. It should be a much improved part of their game.
In the draft, the Falcons addressed a couple of their needs, but still have some holes to fill. The team has desperately needed a wide out for quarterback Mike Vick since he first broke into the league a few years back and they still haven't provided that for him. This year the Falcons hope that their first pick, Alabama-Birmingham wide receiver Roddy White will be able to step into that role. With their second pick they grabbed, Jonathan Babineaux a defensive tackle out of Iowa. He is expected to fight for a good amount of playing time this year since he is the prototypical 3-4 defensive tackle.
The offense has really suffered without the presence of a big time wide receiver threat. Defenses are able to gamble with single coverage on the outside and commit to stop the run whether it comes from the running backs, Warrick Dunn and T.J. Duckett, or Vick. Vick is still the centerpiece of the offense and he seems to be settling into the West Coast offense that Mora loves so much. If the Falcons can get some play out of their wide outs then they should be able to make it to the big game at the end of the year.
The defense was a bunch of monsters last year to opposing offenses. With the additions of Hartwell and Reese they should be even scarier. Also, getting back a healthy D’Angelo Hall will give the secondary a boost. He is thought to be as fast if not faster than Vick and that’s according to Vick himself.
