2007-08 Season

Talk about drama coming into the season, with Michael Vick indicted in animal cruelty charges – the first player to be suspended from the NFL.  They have a new coach trying to pull it together, and small offensive linemen.  On top of that, they’ve had to deal with injuries and confusion on the field – and no depth whatsoever. What makes things worse is a fickle fan base that jumped ship even before the Vick drama. Jerious Norwood may be the only redeeming quality for the Dirty Dirty. They still need to sort out their QB situation – because they have an OL that doesn’t quite suck with Todd McClure and Kynan Forney. The ticket buyers that haven’t jumped ship can definitely expect ATL to fix its structural damage, and quick.

Previous Seasons

In the 2006 off-season the Falcons made some pretty big moves that were all pretty much under the radar. They picked up one of the most underappreciated linebackers in the league Edgerton Hartwell. Hartwell had been with the Baltimore Ravens since he broke into the league and was Ray Lewis’ backup until the moved into the 3-4 scheme. He got his chance to get on the field and was an absolute beast. It will be interesting to see what kind of impact Hartwell will bring to the Falcons when he isn’t living in anyone else’s shadow. The Falcons also picked up linebacker Ike Reese who is another linebacker that plays with a very prominent mean streak. Reports from camp have been that the defense is playing at an intensity level that the franchise has never seen before large in part to these two guys in the middle.

The team also brought in some help for their special teams. It wasn’t a secret to anyone that the Falcons kicking game was sub-par last year and head coach Jim Mora Jr. is a firm believer in having strong special teams play. He believes that if the team can win the field position battle then they will win the game. The Falcons went out and got kicker Todd Peterson and punter Toby Gowin to help out their kicking game. It should be a much improved part of their game.
